Dress Codes of Wimbledon: What to Wear and What Not to Wear

For tennis lovers, there is no bigger event in the calendar year than Wimbledon. The tournament usually takes place between the last two weeks of June and the start of July, with tennis players from across the globe heading to London for the games.

If you love to join in on the fun and immerse yourself in the exciting atmosphere of Wimbledon, dressing the part is essential. While there isn’t a dress code for attendees, it is encouraged to dress smartly. Before you take your seat for the match with your strawberries and cream, here is what you should and shouldn’t wear at Wimbledon.

Wear: Summer Dress

Although the UK weather is notoriously unpredictable, temperatures are usually pleasant during Wimbledon, meaning it’s the perfect time to look in your wardrobe and pick out a summer dress for the occasion. If you want to fit in with other spectators, it’s advised to stick to light colours that will blend perfectly. For those who don’t want to wear a dress, there are lots of other summery outfits that can work just as well.

Avoid: Torn Jeans

This one should go without saying, but you will be surprised that some people rock up to Wimbledon in a pair of ripped jeans. While you may think you look the part, when it comes to gaining admission, it’s unlikely you’ll get through the gate. Remember, dressing smart is highly encouraged, so try and see it as an opportunity to get glammed up, rather than throwing on a standard pair of jeans.

Wear: Panama Hat

Being under the beating sun can take its toll. When temperatures soar and you’re outside in the thick of it, wearing a panama hat will provide some much welcome shade, helping to keep you comfortable throughout the match. Make sure your hat doesn’t block the person’s view behind you, otherwise you may rustle a few feathers.

Avoid: Dirty Trainers

When you take into account that all the tennis stars will be dressed in gleaming white, the last thing you should do is to throw on a pair of dirty trainers that are covered in mud. It’s best to leave your trainers at home and look into alternative footwear.

Wear: Comfortable Flats

When attending Wimbledon, expect to be on your feet for a large portion of the day. Whether it’s queuing up at the entrance gate or walking to and from courts, you need to choose footwear that supports you and keeps you comfortable. A pair of flats will do the job and can be teamed well with your summer outfit. No one wants to go home with blisters and sore feet, so make sure you pick a pair of flats that complement your overall look.

Avoid: Flip Flops

Just because Wimbledon takes place in the summer months, doesn’t mean you should reach for a pair of flip-flops to wear. In fact, Wimbledon actually bans flip-flops altogether, so to avoid having to dash home to change, do stick to your flats, otherwise you will have to watch live tennis online, rather than being there in person!

Whether you’re lucky enough to be a spectator at Centre Court or not, adhering to the fashion dos and don’ts above will ensure you look the part at Wimbledon and avoid sticking out like a sore thumb!
